CLOSING HER EYES as he worked the comb through her hair, Tess shut out all stimuli and mentally cautioned herself against wandering thoughts. Sheâd signed on for a race to the coast.
Sheâd signed on for fun.
Thatâs exactly what she planned to have.
Scooting forward, she escaped his warm embrace. He reached out to catch her, but she stepped away, shaking out her hair, letting the wet strands play over her shoulders, a chilly reminder that she needed to stay in control.
But Anthony wasnât having any part of her escape. Almost before she realized heâd moved, heâd slipped his foot between her legs and tossed her off balance. He stood before she could brace herself then, in a blur of motion, he spun her around and hoisted her up.
She barely had a chance to gasp before finding herself looking up at him from the middle of the bed.
For a breathless moment, Tess could only stare. By then heâd straddled her in another impossibly fast move.
âMy way tonight, chère.â
There was no doubt he meant what he said, but she didnât miss the amusement underlying his expression, just enough to spark her bravado.
âWhat was that?â
âJust making sure I get equal time.â
Not much of a question anymore, as he had her pinned to the bed. âNo, I meant what was that? It was some sort of moveâ¦or something. Do you work out?â
That was a stupid question. The man wouldnât have his body without working out. Add in his look of pure male satisfaction⦠He clearly liked that heâd surprised her.
âMartial arts.â
âOh.â She should have guessed. No one moved as he had without lots of practice.
âDo you know what I like about you, Tess?â
âWhatâs that?â
âYouâre a woman who knows what you want, and youâre not afraid to take it.â
âWhat do you think I want?â
âMe.â
One word issued in that lazy bayou voice made goose bumps spray over her skin. One word that was oh-so true.
Tess did want him, so much that she liked how her world narrowed down to the sight of his dashing smile and broad shoulders when she lay underneath him. She liked the way he held her pinned to the bed with his strong thighs and very obvious proof of his desire.
She liked that he wanted her, liked it much more than she ever would have guessed.
âYou know what I like about us?â he asked, his voice gentling, or maybe that was just the way his golden-brown eyes melted over her.
âWhat?â
âWeâre good together.â
That intimacy thing was happening again, a feeling that hinted more than fun was happening here. A feeling that made her want to slip her arms around his neck and hold him close.
Tess wasnât at all sure why she felt so tender and dreamy tonight, but sex seemed to make her wax romantic. She didnât bother resisting. Looping her arms around his neck, she pressed up against him, indulging the unfamiliar feeling, even though she wasnât a woman who usually looked for tender moments.
Anthony seemed to be a man who liked them, though.
